Free Services From Google like YouTube and Gmail are at Stake for Millions of Users

 

Google has put up an open letter to Australia which will affect Australian users of Google’s search engine and YouTube.

It might be like removing their content from YouTube or Google, the scenario is not clear yet. Google has warned that its free services like Gmail and YouTube are going to be at risk in Australia if a proposed law does not take effect.

The law would enforce Facebook and YouTube to pay for news content which is related to their search engine result and news feeds.

Google has warned that a change in the proposed law will lead Google search and YouTube experience to such a worse condition that puts its free services at risk.

And then, there will be a distinct warning which will come in response to plans down under to make digital giants pay for news content. The affected people will be the millions of Google and YouTube users in Australia.

In an open letter to Australians, Google has also notified them that the risk factors are:

The User data being handed over to Big news Business.

Put free services at risk.

The News Media Bargaining Code would force us to provide you with a worse Google search and Youtube.

Added in the letter MD of Google Australia Melanie Silva stated:

We deeply believe that how daily news is important for society. The daily update of news truly means for all of us and we already have a close partnership with Australian News Business- We pay them millions of dollars and send them millions of clicks per year.

She also added:

What we have offered them is to pay more to license content, but rather than any good feedback to our partnership, they set up their laws to give special treatment to big media companies and encourage them too, to make boundless and unreasonable demands that would put our free services at risk.

Today, Google also stated that it will be ready to fight against every reform and regulation of News businesses. 

A draft which is covered by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission last month also covers this matter regarding the Google algorithm.

No one knows exactly how it works besides the people at Google who work on it. But overall, this is the general idea of how Google ranks websites.

And obviously, it will not be okay for Google, if its Algorithm strategy being notified to news agencies.

The draft legislation which is presented by Canberra comprises up to $5million per breach or 10% of a company’s local turnover.

In response to Google’s Latest statement, the Australian competition regulator said:

Google’s open letter contains misinformation.

The Australian Competition and consumer commission chairman Rod sims also stated:

Australians would not be charged for any free services of Google and the user data would not be shared to the Australian news business

He considers how a healthy news media sector is necessary for a well-functioning democracy.
